| The Center for Very Large Business Applications (CVLBA) is a joint research initiative of the Technische Universität München
and the Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg which was initiated by SAP in 2006. The initiative provides funding for five
researchers at each university.
The decision by SAP AG to fund research with these two university partners stems from the cooperation experiences and the
knowledge transfer that has taken place by jointly running the SAP University Alliances Project. SAP wanted to invest in the potential
that could be realized by adding research resources to the chair of business informatics in Magdeburg and the chair for information
systems in Munich. This allows the parties involved to apply their research competencies in Information Management
and IT System Landscape Engineering with a specific focus on Very Large Business Applications.
Both chairs operate University Competence Centers (UCC) for hosting SAP software for educational services. Extensive experience
in operating Very Large Business Applications, especially Enterprise Resource Planning Systems, has been obtained in
the more than seven years that the UCCs have been in operation. These experiences and infrastructures provide ideal conditions
for researching next generation VLBAs and service ecosystems. The UCCs have afforded direct access to more than 60,000
SAP users which has consequently provided insight into customers’ concerns.
Independence of university administration requirements and the unique conditions of the UCCs provides researchers the opportunity
to conduct groundbreaking research at the Center for Very Large Business Applications. |

| Realisierung |
| Drawing from the competencies and resources of SAP and the university partners, the Center for Very Large Business Applications
plans to become a leading research center in Europe for issues concerning Very Large Business Applications.
The focus of CVLBA lies on the systematic development of methods, concepts and tools for future application landscapes, service
ecosystems and their management. The following research questions will direct the research activities, amongst others:
1. How to advance the systematic development of innovation for users and providers of Very Large Business Applications (VLBA)
- Innovation Communities and Communities of Practice
- User-driven innovation processes (e.g. idea competitions for VLBA)
2. How can sustainable and high-performance VLBA architectures be run?
- Virtualization & Performance 4 SOA
3. How can the potential of VLBAs be tapped in health care systems?
- Seamless Health Care in Service Eco-Systems
4. How can the concurrent maturation of service provider and service consumer be supported?
- Evolution of provider-consumer relationship in the SaaS market
5. What are the properties of inter--organizational business applications in order to achieve information visibility in supplier value networks?
- Required IT Capabilities for Information Visibility in Supplier Networks
- Performance implications of Information Visibility in Supplier Networks |
